Similarity, conservatism, and rationality

چکیده
We examine some formalizations of the notion of similarity as it appears in learning, and of the notion of conservatism as it appears in reasoning. We show that the underlying formalizations are closely related to each other and to a central notion of the formal theory of rationality. These connections indicate how the structures of similarity judgments and conservatism can arise naturally in agents which rationally govern their own representation and reasoning. Investigation of Rational Pricing of Cash and Accruals Components the Earnings Considering the Moderating Effect of Conservatism
Abstract Accounting earning and its components are the most important accounting items in stock pricing. If investors do not achieve abnormal returns using this information, the capital market is said to have acted efficiently in reflecting accounting earning information in stock pricing. In other words, pricing stocks is rational. The purpose of this study is to investigate the market re...
متن کاملWhat Might be the Case after a Change in View
When it comes to belief dynamics Y how a rational agent ought to change her full-beliefs after learning something new Y doxastic conservatism seems to have a lot going for it. Information is not gratuitous, the slogan goes, and so changes in view should always be minimal changes in view. This is the core of conservatism, and looks like just the kind of constraint that rationality imposes on bel...
متن کاملPhylogenetic niche conservatism, phylogenetic signal and the relationship between phylogenetic relatedness and ecological similarity among species.
Ecologists are increasingly adopting an evolutionary perspective, and in recent years, the idea that closely related species are ecologically similar has become widespread. In this regard, phylogenetic signal must be distinguished from phylogenetic niche conservatism. Phylogenetic niche conservatism results when closely related species are more ecologically similar that would be expected based ...
متن کاملEvolutionary conservatism and convergence both lead to striking similarity in ecology, morphology and performance across continents in frogs.
Many clades contain ecologically and phenotypically similar species across continents, yet the processes generating this similarity are largely unstudied, leaving fundamental questions unanswered. Is similarity in morphology and performance across assemblages caused by evolutionary convergence or by biogeographic dispersal of evolutionarily conserved ecotypes? Does convergence to new ecological...
متن کاملTesting the Ecological Rationality of Base Rate Neglect
What simple learning rules can allow agents to cope with changing environments? We tested whether a rule that neglects base rates of events in the world — something that is usually considered irrational — could be as successful as Bayesian inference — the usual standard of rationality — in making cuebased predictions about events in time-varying environments. We focused on environments in which...
